...Recent studies indicate that Massachusetts is losing the young professionals, working parents and recent graduates that are critical to balancing the profile of communities like Chelmsford. The town's Master Plan predicted in 1996 that at full-buildout, Chelmsford would increase its housing stock by 1,111 units. In reality, we have witnessed an actual increase of 1,359 units and counting! This is occuring at the same time that many young professionals and families are leaving our area because of the lack of real affordable housing.
According to a study by the UMass Donohue Institute in 2003:
"younger households ...(particularly between the ages of 31 and 41) contribute very significantly...the 31-41 year old age-group is the primary force behind PTA, PTO, and other school organizations...and are also far more likely to be active in professional and trade organizations..." They are also "...one of the most likely age ranges to be active in environmental causes and neighborhood groups."
We need more affordable housing. PCF supports robust local initiatives that provide these needs in the manner best suited for our community. Further, we feel strongly that issues of housing and schools are closely related and significantly impact other town services. Whether you are a parent, a student or a retired resident, these are issues that impact you. We are many faces with one goal: Preserve Chelmsford's Future!
